William E. Cross Jr. (born in Evanston, Illinois) is a theorist and researcher in the field of ethnic identity development, specifically Black identity development. He is best known for his Nigrescence Model, first detailed in a publication, and his book, Shades of Black, published in Cross’ Nigrescence Model expanded upon the work of Black psychologists who came before him. 50 Shades of Black Vol. 1 (of a soon to be 3 volume book series) is comprised of contributions from people all over the world in the form of scholarly essays, personal narratives, poems, photographs, paintings, and other artistic contributions.
